WORLD RESTART A HEART DAY

Classes: VIII to X                                                                                                                                        2018-2019

Restart a heart is a designated yearly day of action with the aim to teach vital life-saving Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) skills to as many people as possible. The Indian Resuscitation Council , an initiative of Indian society of Anesthesiologists plans to impart Compression Only Life Support (COLS) training to maximum number of people in a day across India to celebrate the World Restart A Heart Day.

As a part of it a campaign was organised on 23rd October, 2018 in our school. Dr. Srinivasulu D. Professor & H.O.D of Dept. of Anesthesiology, VIMS, Ballari, Dr. Bala Bhaskar Professor of Dept. of Anesthesiology, VIMS, Ballari and President of ISA National, Dr. Bala Subramanya H. Professor, Dr. Kiran Chand N. Asst. Professor & Secretary of ISA Ballari Branch and Post Graduate students Dr. Vinod, Dr. Ravi, Dr. Krishna, Dr. Amarnath attended the campaign. The main purpose of this event is to to create mass awareness about CPR and the importance of improving Resuscitation Training in India.

Dr. Srinivasulu gave a brief introduction of the day and asked the students to use and spread Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) skills to make benefit to others and save life of others. Dr. Bala Subramanya explained the basics of CPR, means, “Emergency life saving procedure performed when some one’s heart stops beating i.e. Cardiac arrest” (Cardiac = Heart, Pulmonary = Lung, Resuscitation = Reviving someone /restoring).

CPR should be started with in 3 minutes, if it is delayed the victim reduces the chance of survival by 7 – 10%. The signs of cardiac arrest are unconsciousness, absence of arterial pulse and breathing. Dr. Bala Subramanya also demonstrated steps to give CPR to the victims.

Steps for CPR to the Victims are as follows:

Step 1: Ensure scene safety.

Step 2: Assess responsiveness.

Step 3: If responsive - Observe the victim, keep him in the recovery position & shift him to the nearest hospital.

If non responsive – Shout for help & call 108.

Step 4: Identify lower part of sternum.

Step 5:  To start chest compressions.

He also guided to give Chest Compressions.

 Steps for chest compressions are:

ü  Locating lower part of sternum.

ü  Identification of position and placement of hands for chest compression.

ü  Keep heel of hand 2 fingers above Xiphoid process.

ü  Keep other heel of the hand above the first one and interlock fingers.

ü  Locking fingers.

ü  Wrist, elbow and shoulder should be in same line.

ü  Count loudly 1,2,3…..30.

ü  30 chest compressions should be given in one set.

ü  Give 5 cycles of chest compressions.

ü  Don’t interrupt chest compressions.

ü  Allow full recoil of chest after each chest compression.

ü  If more than one person, interchange for every 5 cycles.

This can be continued till the medical help arrives or the victim is revived.

First Post Graduate students demonstrated with manikin. Later students, teachers and parents were divided into batches of ten. Each team was provided with a manikin and were asked to do 30 chest compressions with the guidance of the post graduate students.

We thank all the doctors and the post graduate students for giving valuable information by spending their precious time with us. We hope our students gained enough knowledge from this campaign and would implement the CPR Skills in their real life when needed.
