There is a saying that ‘Teacher as learner is the centrepiece linking classroom and school improvement.’ In order to update the skills of the teachers Dream World School has taken an initiative and requested the CBSE Centre of Excellence, Chennai to organise a workshop on Classroom Management in the school campus on 28th and 29th May of 2018. In this programme the teachers of Dream World School and Satyam International School have participated and made the programme successful. The resource persons for this programme are Smt. Vamshee Priya Amar and Sri. Manoj Kumar Tiwari.

On the first day, orientation started with Ah ha (positive)... and Oh no (negative)... experiences of the teachers faced in the school by the students. The resource persons stated that classroom management is being prepared for the class, motivating students, creating safe, comforting learning environment and preparing students for the future life. They demonstrated through activities about the three components of effective classroom management which are Content, Conduct and Covenant. They confirmed the teachers learning Style by VARK method and assured that teachers can manage the time through setting goals, making schedule, revising and revisiting the lesson plans.

The next day session started with an activity on different teaching styles of a teacher. Just as people have individual learning styles, teachers have teaching styles that works best, guides and directs their instructional processes. This affects students and their ability to learn. So the teachers were divided into two groups, one group to present different styles of teaching, the other group to identify what kind of teaching it is. Teachers actively participated in this activity with the guidance of the recourse persons. Next the teachers were given the task to make their own Rules for the classroom. The rules are classified into five types like Clearly Stated, Reasonable, Enforceable, General, Stated Positively. All the participants worked individually in this activity to make clear rules for the students.

As everyone needs appreciation for their work in the same way, the students also need appreciation and rewards. So the afternoon session started with different types of Rewards. A video was shown on Rewards by the resource persons. They explained the difference between the rein forcers, rewards and bribery. In the next activity teachers are asked to recall their own favourite teacher and their special attributes. The challenges faced by teachers in establishing positive relationships with the students and parents were discussed. Teachers were guided to treat students as individuals, promoting positive peer relationships, communicating effectively with parents and the ways of establishing contact and dealing with the parents effectively. The next session was on managing classes with large number of students. Teaching large classes is a challenge but it can also offer many opportunities. Teachers improve teaching skills along with the organizational, managing skills, interpersonal skills, presentation skills, evaluation skills etc. The teachers worked on their own dream class, presented and shared their requirements for their dream class in the next activity.

Teachers are in a profession of trust, if they are efficient the class will be effective and students never miss their class. This workshop strengthened the teachers to come out with new ideas to deal with the young minds according to the situation of the class.

We thank the resource persons for making the programme lively. They boosted the confidence of the teachers and made to feel proud to be a teacher. The teachers who have attended the programme had received the Provisional Certificate by the CBSE.

We thank our School Management and the Principal for organising and encouraging the teachers to participate in such programmes. We wish to get such programmes from CBSE a lot more in future.
