Class-VII Field Trip
On Tuesday, 6thAugust 2019, the students of class V visited R.K. Dairy Farm, Ballari, along with the respective teachers. It is about 10 km away from Dream World School.

Dairy farming is a type of agriculture focusing on the production of milk. The main objective of dairy farming practice is to produce safe quality milk from the healthy animals.

Mr. Ram Krishna, the owner of the dairy farm educated our students about the dairy farm. The area of the dairy farm is 3.5 acres and it was established in the year 2015.

The farm was divided into two major parts - the shed and the yard. There are 60 cows and 20 calves in the shed. Around forty to fifty square feet is provided to each cow. One Ongole cow, Sixty-seven Holstein Friesian cows and two Jersey cows are the three varieties of cows reared in the farm, among which the Ongole breed is used only for breeding, Holstein Friesian and Jersey breeds are used for milking. They feed the cows twice a day, with green fodder in the shed and dry fodder in the yard. Each cow drinks about forty-five to fifty litres of water per day. They also feed mixed feed to cows which is made up of maize, bajra, wheat bran, rice bran and cotton cake. Each cow consumes about six to eight kg of feed per day.

They milk the cow twice a day that is before 5:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. by using milking machines. The average yield of milk produced by Holstein Friesian per day is twenty litres and Jersey is about fifteen to sixteen litres. On an average of four hundred litres of raw milk is transported to the Karnataka Milk Federation as soon as they finish the milking process.

House keeping is regularly done in the farm, during this period cows are left free in the yard for some time. After the house keeping, the dung is stored in the pit and used as manure to their fields.

It was an interesting field trip for children who came to know how Dairy farming is practiced, for long term production of milk. Students have also realised the benefits of a dairy farming to the society. One in fulfilling the nutritional diet of the people and two in providing employment to many people.

We thank Mr. Ram Krishna for the support and concern in fulfilling our objective in this field trip.

Class-VI Field Trip
On 9 August 2019, the students of class VI visited the Kalpana Chawla Planetarium, Ballari along with teachers to know more about evolution of man.

Ballari is gifted with a planetarium named after the great astronaut Kalpana Chawla. It enlightens us about evolution of life, important discoveries and milestones of science.

The students were instructed to visit ‘Evolution Walk Through’ section to observe various stages of man’s evolution which were illustrated with many beautiful paintings. Human Evolution is the process by which human beings were developed on the earth from the extinct primates to the present. The evolution of life began in the oceans with single-celled prokaryotic such as bacteria, about 3.8 billion years ago, before the land-based creatures were emerged. Some of these gradually evolved into the large reptiles that were later displaced by mammals. Mammals are warm-blooded creatures having greater capacity to learn from experience than that of other animals and this capacity has reached its highest development in the human species.

Our students came to know that, we humans are Homo sapiens, a culture-bearing, upright-walking species that live on the ground first evolved in Africa about 1.8 to 1.3 million years ago. This species spread through Africa, Asia, and Europe. Human first appeared in the fossil record around 66 million years ago. There are many stages, but the main three stages are Homo Habilis, Homo Erectus and Homo Sapiens which is the modern man. All the stages together are called Homo Nibs. The students were able to understand that man is a product of organic evolution. He is the most intelligent vertebrate on this planet. The supremacy of man is mainly due to the evolution of his hand and his brain.

Students were elucidated about the discovery of Fire. Discovery of fire provided a source of warmth, protection, improvement on hunting and a method for cooking food. Due to the increased digestibility of many cooked foods, less digestion was needed to procure the necessary nutrients. As a result, the gastrointestinal tract and organs in the digestive system decreased in size. Thus, humans evolved from the large colons and tracts that are seen in other primates to smaller ones. This may have contributed to the evolution of human geographic dispersal and changes to diet and behavior.

Later, our students were guided to observe various specimens of organs of Human Body like heart, brain, kidneys, lungs and liver with gallbladder. The students also witnessed C.V. Raman Lab by experiencing the models such as center of gravity, periscope etc.

Our students were allowed to perceive the display of models in Sir M. Vishveshwariah industrial section such as Jindal steel works, Tornangallu; Tungabhadra Project, Hosapete; Historic Railway Station, Ballari; Bengaluru International Airport, Bengaluru and the ‘Science Park’ which is cordial for the students with information.

We are thankful to the Administrative Incharge and Shri T. N. Thippeswamy, the Display Assistant of the Kalpana Chawla Planetarium, Ballari for their support to complete this field trip successfully.

Class-VII Field Trip
Agriculture is the cultivation and breeding of animals, plants and fungi for food, fibre, biofuel, medicines and other products used to sustain and enhance life. Agriculture was the key development in the rise of sedentary human civilization, where by farming of domesticated species created food surpluses that nurtured the development of civilization.

With the objective of knowing the modern farming practices and vermiculture on Monday 5th August 2019, the students of class VII along with teachers visited the Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Hagari.

The Krishi Vigyan Kendra, was established in January 1995. It is about 14 Kms away from the Ballari city. The main building consists of staff rooms, a training hall, a diagnostic lab, and a well-furnished information centre. The Krishi Vigyan Kendra is using 100 acres of cultivation land for its research.

Mr Ravi Shankar G, the head of the Krishi Vigyan Kendra, introduced the staff members, detailed about their work and explained the methods of farming carried on.

The farm is divided into many parts for various purposes like the preparation of vermi compost, animal husbandry and production of biodiesel. Firstly, we saw the process of making vermi compost, a farm yard manure which is prepared using African earthworms. The earthworms sufficiently use all the agricultural waste and produce more amount of worm castings which acts as manure for the crops. They generally grow organic food crops but as a research centre, they also use various chemical fertilisers and pesticides. Dr. Ramesh, the Veterinarian explained our students about animal husbandry where they rear goats, sheep, and cows. They explained how animals are reared and what are the benefits of rearing animals. They also have a unit producing biodiesel using pongamia and neem seeds. They run all their vehicles by using this biodiesel mixed with the diesel in 1:9 ratio.

It was an interesting field trip for children who came to know how animal husbandry is practiced and vermi compost is prepared. It was a place where children also learnt how we can exchange and use resources judiciously.

We thank Mr. Ravi Shankar and Dr. Ramesh for their support and cooperation in fulfilling our objective in this field trip.

Class-IX Field Trip
On Thursday 5th September 2019, the students of class IX along with respective teachers visited a fish hatchery, situated in Moka, Ballari, managed by the Department of Fisheries. It is about 20 km away from Dream World School.

Fish is an important item of food for many people as it is rich in proteins, minerals and vitamins like A and D. We visited the fish hatchery to gain practical knowledge about Composite Fish Culture. There are two ways of obtaining fishes. They are Capture Fishery and Culture Fishery. In capture fishery, fishes are captured from their natural habitats and are sold. As all the people are not accessible to the fishes by the capture fishery method culture fishery was introduced. In the culture fishery, eggs of the fishes are collected and they are cultured in natural sources of water or artificial ponds. ‘Composite Fish Culture’ is the main type of Culture Fishery. It includes rearing of different types of fishes in the same pond. This helps people to get more profit economically.

We were guided by Mr. Vellaya Swami the staff of the Department of Fisheries. The hatchery consists of four small ponds with the depth of 6 feet and the length and breadth is 10 X 12 feet. Every pond is covered with series of wires arranged parallel to each other to avoid birds capturing the hatchlings. In all the ponds composite fish culture is done with three types of fishes namely Catla, Mrigal, and Rohu. These three fishes are grown in the same pond as they do not compete for food. Catla is a surface feeder, Rohu is column/middle zone feeder and Mrigal is a bottom feeder.

The students went around the ponds and observed the varieties of hatchlings that are reared. The hatchlings are brought from the hatching hapas at TB dam. There are around 4,00,000 hatchlings in the ponds. Once the hatchlings are grown to a size of 2-3 cm fingerlings they sell these fingerlings to the farmers to rear them in their fish farm at a minimal price. The fingerlings are packed in the large polythene bags with half-filled water and oxygen. The quantity of oxygen in these bags used in transportation depends upon distance to be covered and size of the fingerlings.

The students were explained that in every pond 40,000 fishes are grown. Among them 30,000 are Rohu and 10,000 are the other two types. This is because Rohu grows faster. The fishes are fed with rice bran cakes and groundnut oil cakes in every morning. They periodically check the ponds for the proper growth of the fingerlings and also keep the ponds clean.

Fish culturing is an economically important activity done not only to obtain fish as it is the main source of food but also it is a provider of employment to many people. The visit to the hatchery was a practical learning experience for the students to understand the concept of animal husbandry.

We thank the Department of Fisheries and the staff for their support and cooperation in providing this opportunity of learning for our students.
