Prime Skills 1 - Field Trip

To: Arunodaya Cold Storage, Ballari.

Class: V
2019-2020

Class-I Field Trip

On Monday, 1st July 2019, the students of Class V along with the teachers visited the Arunodaya Cold Storage, located in the Industrial area, Ballari. It is about 12 km away from Dream World School. We left for the cold storage from school at 9:45 a.m.

At the cold storage we were guided by its staff Mr. Prabhakar Reddy and his team who detailed us about the structure and the function of the cold storage. The cold storage has five floors and it can store crops in about 1,20,000 to 1,50,000 bags each of 30 kg of weight. The crops like chillies, coriander, groundnuts, tamarind, and different types of dal are stored in this cold storage. The temperature maintained to preserve the stock is about 3°C to 5°C.

The entire building has 2 cooling chambers and 12 cold fans. The gas used for refrigeration is Ammonia gas. The floors of the building are constructed with wood as they are good insulators to maintain the temperature of the cold storage. There are two lifts in the cold storage to carry the bags to different floors. There are 25 workers working in the cold storage for different tasks such as to operate generator, to count and record the number of bags, to arrange the bags in order etc.

Food storage is very important to preserve the food for the farmers. This preservation technique is helpful for the farmers to store and sell their yields in future, so that they get a reasonable price for their produce.

In a place like Ballari, which is hot and arid, farmers find these cold storages as a boon to store grains, fruits and vegetables which are perishable in nature. We must have some more cold storages for the better future of our farmers and for the food security.

We are thankful to Mr. K. L. Thippa Reddy and Mr. Prabhakar Reddy for their support and concern in detailing us about the cold storage and fulfilling our objective in this field trip.

Prime Skills 1 - Field Trip

To: Karnataka Ware House Corporation, Ballari (Dist.)

Class: VIII
2019-2020

Class-I Field Trip
On Friday 5th July 2018, the students of class VIII along with respective teachers visited the Karnataka Ware House, located in KIADB industrial area, Ballari, managed by State Government. It is 9 km away from Dream World School.

We all know that ‘Food’ is essential for all living beings as it provides energy to perform various functions, growth and development. Sometimes, there occurs a need for storing food mainly wheat and rice to meet the future requirements. Thus, there is a necessity to store food in appropriate methods. Hence, Indian government has taken a step to establish organisations called Ware Houses. Its quarters are located in every district of India in order to collect and store the food grains.

There are two types of food commodities perishable and non-perishable. Both have different storage techniques. Dry storage is used for non-perishable food commodities and cold storage for perishable food commodities.

We visited the Karnataka Ware House to know the method of storing food grains in dry storage system. It is run by the state government. The ware house was built and set-up in 2004. This Unit has 3 godowns. The first godown is 4 acres in size and has the capacity of storing 8900 tonnes of grains and the other two godowns are 1 acre each in size with the capacity of storing 1000 tonnes of grains each.

Each godown has 3 sections named A, B and C. Each sacking rack contains around 2500 bags arranged in a particular system, i.e., in a checker board manner which do not allow these bags to fall down. Every sacking rack has a gap between them for checking of damage or to count the number of bags. These bags are fumigated with tablets of pesticides like aluminium phosphate after a period of 45 days. They mix melatheon with water to spray on the ground to protect the grains from insects and deltamethrin is sprayed on the grains once in 15 days. The government stores the food grains procured from the farmers from various places in and around Ballari for a significant period of time. The amount of rent paid by the farmer is 1 and 20 paise per bag per week and 6 and 20 paise per bag per month. The major problem while transporting the grains is the damage in the bags.

The farmers can avail for loan facilities from various government banks using the bond given by the ware house office as the surety.

It is truly said that farmers are backbone of our country. It is not an exaggeration to say that without farmer, food availability to all parts of the country is not possible. The visit to the Karnataka Ware House enabled our students to realize the concept of ‘not to waste the food’, and how important is food storage and that it can rescue both the farmers and consumers from the conditions of food insecurity.

We thank the staff of Karnataka Ware House Corporation for their support and cooperation in educating our students regarding the storage of grains.

Prime Skills 1 - Field Trip

To: The Allipur Reservoir and Water Supply, Allipur, Ballari (Tq. & Dt.)

Class: IX
2019-2020

Class-I Field Trip
On 6th July 2019, the students of IX standard, along with the teachers visited the Allipur Reservoir and Water Supplying Board, Allipur.

Ballari is one among the places which experiences arid climate with frequent water scarcity. The visit was a vivid experience for the students regarding the water storage area, water supply and the problems related to it. The reservoir is built with 486 acres of land with 7.5 meters of water holding capacity connected to the Tungabhadra Dam, from where the water is drawn. It takes 5 months time to fill the reservoir with two inlets filling the reservoir with 1 centimeter of water every day. Due to lack of rainfall we found the reservoir with water at 1.5 meters height which proves the poor situation of water availability, its accessibility and affordability.

We later visited the Water Treatment and Supply, Allipur, to learn how water is purified and supplied to the areas in the Ballari City. Students learnt the process of water purification and the way it is stored into the sump.

Overall the visit brought an awareness among the students regarding the most valuable resource – WATER. People must be aware of the resources around them and know how much to use and how to use them. The visit definitely makes this objective very clear to the Students.

We thank the Karnataka Water Supply and Drainage Board for their support and cooperation in fulfilling our objective in this Field Trip.
