An orientation programme on ‘Value Based Education’ was organized in our school for the students of classes VIII to X to implant ethical values of our culture among them. This orientation was conducted on Monday, 19.11.2018 from 9:30 a.m. to 10:50 a.m. addressed by Dr. K. Ananth Ram, the retired professor in Kannada at University of Mysuru, Mysuru. At present Dr. K. Ananth Ram is working as a teacher to train High-school teachers in diploma course of ‘Moral Education’, organised by Ramakrishna Institute of Moral and Spiritual Education (RIMSE), at Ramakrishna Ashrama, Mysuru. The chief of our school Mr. K. Anil Babu and the teachers of class VIII to X attended the orientation.

The Kannada teacher of our school, Mr. Shashidhara introduced Dr. K. Ananth Ram to the gathering on behalf of VAG India trust. Our VAG Army Pragyana student leader Ms. Meghana of class IX felicitated him with a garland as a token of love and respect. He was invited in the rhythmic chanting of Veda mantras by our students in the guidance of Ms. Kamakshi, the spiritual teacher of our school.

Dr. Ananth Ram began the orientation by chanting slokas to pray the God. He appreciated the management for inculcating ethical values and Vedic Culture along with regular academics. In his orientation, he said that a nightingale eats the leaves of a mango tree and thus, there formed a bond between the bird and the tree. Thus, the creation is made with mutual dependence. He reminded the view of Mahatma Gandhi that if a girl child is educated, then it is equivalent to the whole family.

He said that Vidyarthi means vidya plus arthi. So, a student must keep gaining knowledge all the time from various sources. Knowledge is an important resource. It is the light, life and energetic resource. Knowledge can be gained through meditation. He clarified that ‘marks’ alone are not important, but living without any negative remarks in life is crucial.

His speech was very much fascinated by the students as it continued in a jovial and pleasant manner. He attributed that now-a-days students are more intelligent than the teachers. He also said that alone intelligence (Budhi) without intellectuality (Viveka) is meaningless. Students’ life should have five main characteristics as shuno nidra, baka dhyana, kaaka cheshta, mita haro, griha thyagi.

He highlighted the importance and necessity of unity among people in a passionate manner by comparing it with the five fingers of our hand. When all the fingers are brought together to make a fist, it is more powerful than a finger. Similarly, we all should live unitedly so that we overcome all types of problems boldly. Our human body requires vitamins. If they are deficient in our body, we fall sick. Likewise, we should have the quality of Patriotism among us which is the vitamin for the unity and integrity of a nation. One should have gratitude and devotion for his motherland.

He said that a flower wishes to be on the path of the warriors. The soldiers fight for freedom of the motherland. They are ready to sacrifice their lives. So the flowers desire to be under the feet  of warriors than that of being in a temple or a decorative item.

He explained that a family plays an important role in education. He gave the meaning of family as F = Father; A = And; M = Mother; I = I; L = Love; Y = You. Thus, FAMILY is nothing but ‘Father And Mother I Love You’. He stressed that one should possess life skills than that of mere bookish knowledge. One should keep learning lessons from the experiences of one’s life. In this regard, he quoted the story of a Pandit. Once, when the Pandit was crossing a river in a boat, he drowned in the middle of the river due to cyclone as he didn’t know swimming in spite of having bookish knowledge, whereas the illiterate sailor saved himself as he knew swimming.

Dr. Anant Ram’s narrations were clear, impressive and effective. We are very much thankful to him for accepting our invitation and enlightened our students and staff in the domain of Value Based Education. The orientation ended with vote of thanks.
