On Tuesday, 21 August 2018 our school organised an orientation programme on ‘Road Safety’ for the students of classes VI to X in our school campus. A team of doctors from ‘Ballari Orthopaedic Society, Ballari’ oriented our students on the occasion of ‘National Bone and Joint Day’, which is celebrated on 4th August of every year. This orientation focussed on how to reduce the risk factors of road accidents.

It is not exaggerated saying that there was no single day in India without a road accident in the past two decades. Statistics revealed that a person going on a road has a risk of injury or death due to various reasons and also there is one death in every four minutes due to a road accident in India. A road accident may impact the homely environment of a family very pathetically. Consequently, it is also a danger sign for the welfare of a nation. Thus, it is crucial to create awareness about road safety measures and their implementation, especially for students, the future global citizens.

In the beginning of the orientation, we cordially invited the team of doctors and they were introduced to the gathering. The doctors who attended our school for the orientation, were:

(i) Dr. Ashwini Kumar Singh, the President of Orthopaedic Society. He pursued MBBS and MD in orthopaedic. At present, he is working as a professor at VIMS, Ballari.

(ii)    Dr. Srinivas, the ex-secretary of Orthopaedic Society, succeeded MBBS and MD in orthopaedic. He is working as an associate professor at VIMS, Ballari.

(iii)   Dr. Mukesh, the member of Orthopaedic Society, succeeded MBBS and DNB in orthopaedic. He is working as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon in Sanjeevini Hospital, Ballari.

Dr. Srinivas educated our students about ‘Road Safety and Traffic Rules’ with the PPT. He suggested that many accidents can be avoided by following road safety methods. In this regard, he addressed the following aspects in his speech.

·           Follow the traffic rules strictly.

·           Never jump signals.

·           Do not cross the speed limits.

·           Do not operate mobiles while driving.

·           Do not jump unmanned railway gates.

·           Always give way to the ambulance.

·           Wear helmet and tie seat belts while driving/travelling.

·           Do not keep hands outside the vehicles while travelling.

·           Do not drive after drunk as drunken driving is one of the leading causes of road fatalities.

·           Pedestrians should cross the junction road only at zebra crossing.

·           Pedestrians should walk on footpath.

Dr. Srinivas cleared the doubts raised by the students. The orientation programme ended by giving vote of thanks to the team of doctors.

We hope that this orientation helps our students to realize the importance of road safety measures, and they all implement the measures without fail not in letter, but in its true spirit for the welfare of a healthy nation.

We thank the doctors of ‘Ballari Orthopaedic Society, Ballari’ for giving valuable information about road safety measures and for creating awareness in avoiding road accidents, to our students and teachers as well.
